An online friend
With a reliable online friend, you can have regular one-to-one discussions in a way that suits you both, for example, via email or the messaging app of your choice.
Discussions with a reliable online friend
You can join Red Cross friend activities by completing the online friend request form. The online friend service will connect you with a trained volunteer friend. The service will consider the wishes of both the volunteer and the new friend when pairing people up.
Online friends typically talk a few times a month. Discussion can take the form of long-form correspondence or quick chats. You can also think of things to do online together with your friend. Some online friends like to play online games together, for example.
Online friend activities are based on online communications and do not include face to face meetings. If you are looking for a friend to meet in person, contact your local Red Cross branch friend visitor service.
The online activities are anonymous, meaning that we do not reveal the true identities of the participants to the parties. Volunteer online friends have been trained by the Red Cross, but utilise conventional interpersonal skills in their activities.
The activities are free of charge and suitable to people of all ages.
“I feel I have received more substance in my life simply for being able to follow the things my online friend is interested in that I do not know that much about.”
